2013 Preview: California volleyball
California made the postseason for the 11th consecutive year, but exited in the first round for the second-straight season. The Golden Bears wrapped up the season tied for sixth overall in Conference standings, which was their lowest finish since 2002. This year, head coach Rich Feller stands at the helm of a predominantly young squad that consists of only two seniors and three juniors and brings in six newcomers.
» Two of the top four scorers for California return: seasoned SR OH Adrienne Gehan and JR OH/OPP Christina Higgins. Gehan paced the Golden Bears offensively, registering an average of 3.56 points per set while also contributing 57 total blocks at the net. Higgins, who saw action in 108 out of a possible 118 sets, was third overall in the Bears' scoring efforts, registering 330.5 points of her own as a sophomore.
» Anchoring the setter position is SR Joan Caloiaro, who registered 1,206 assists in her junior season, fourth overall in the Conference. Caloiaro also had the most double-double games in the Pac-12 last year with 18 total. The Bears will also have FR Alyssa Jensen, who was a member of the Pac-12 All-Star-Team that traveled to China over the summer, available to direct the floor.
» California will have to accomodate for losing its two primary blockers in Kat Brown and Shannon Hawari, both of whom were in the top 10 for blocks in the Pac-12.
» SO Lara Vukasovic will be replacing honorable mention all-Pac-12 Correy Johnson at opposite. After playing in only 70 sets in her freshman season, she will have to transfer into a starting role immediately.
» SO OH Nikki Gombar will be out of action due to offseason surgery. Gombar appeared in 117 sets last season.
