Oregon State's Payton II named Pac-12 Men's Basketball Player of the Week
SAN FRANCISCO - OREGON STATE junior guard Gary Payton II has been named Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for play from Jan. 19-25, the Conference office announced today in a vote of media who cover Pac-12 men’s basketball.
The Las Vegas, Nev., native averaged 19.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game in leading the Beavers to a home sweep over UCLA and USC. Payton II posted 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals in the 66-55 win over UCLA, then followed with a double-double against USC with 21 points and 10 rebounds. His steal in the final seconds against the Trojans also clinched the 59-55 victory for OSU. For the week, he shot 15-of-27 (.555) from the field, 3-of-10 (.300) from three-point range and 6-of-9 (.667) from the free throw line. Payton II leads Oregon State in scoring, rebounding and steals, and has helped the Beavers to their best overall (14-5) and Pac-12 record (5-2) since 1990.
The honor marks Payton II’s first-career weekly award, and Oregon State’s 47th weekly selection all-time.
The Beavers head to the desert this week, playing at Arizona State on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. MT then at Arizona on Friday, Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. MT. Both games will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
