Washington's Andrews earns second #Pac12Hoops weekly award of season
SAN FRANCISCO - WASHINGTON senior Andrew Andrews collected his second Pac-12 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week award - as voted upon by media who cover the conference - of the season on Monday after leading the Huskies to a 2-0 start to league play.
Andrews, the Pac-12’s leading scorer who also won the award on Nov. 30, averaged 29.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals as Washington (10-4) started 2-0 in conference play for the first time since 2012-13 with its first sweep of the league’s Los Angeles schools since 2011-12.
The 6-2 guard from Portland matched his career-highs of 35 points and 17 made free throws on 19 attempts in UW’s 96-93 double-overtime victory over No. 25 UCLA on Friday. He added six boards, three assists, three steals and tallied seven of his team’s 13 points in the second extra session to key the Huskies to the upset.
On Sunday, Andrews extended his double-digit scoring streak to 25 consecutive games - the fifth-longest stretch in the nation - with 24 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals in an 87-85 triumph over USC on Sunday. He went 4-of-8 behind the arc for the second straight game and converted the go-ahead basket with 25 seconds left to push Washington to 2-0.
Andrews has scored 20-or-more points in eight of UW’s 14 games this season, including a trio of 30-point performances, to rank 19th nationally in scoring at 21.1 points per game. He is third in the nation in free throws made (111) and fourth in attempts (133).
The Pac-12, which plays 10 games over five days this week including four Pac-12 Networks contests on Saturday, Jan. 9, has a national-best nine teams predicted to earn NCAA Tournament bids in CBSSports.com bracketologist Jerry Palm’s latest projection. Other games of highlight are CALIFORNIA at OREGON (6 p.m. PT, ESPN2) and STANFORD at OREGON STATE (8 p.m. PT, ESPNU) on Wednesday, Jan. 6, ARIZONA at UCLA (6 p.m. PT, ESPN2) on Thursday, Jan. 7, UTAH at COLORADO (7 p.m. PT, FS1) on Friday, Jan. 8, and STANFORD at OREGON (7 p.m. PT, ESPNU) on Sunday, Jan. 10.
