ARIZONA STATE’S MOLINARO NAMED GOLFER OF THE YEAR
UCLA’S LEE NAMED FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
UCLA’S FORSYTH NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - In a vote of the Pac-12 women’s golf coaches, ARIZONA STATE senior Giulia Molinaro was named Pac-12 Golfer of the Year, UCLA’s Erynne Lee was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and UCLA head coach Carrie Forsyth was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Molinaro is the fourth Sun Devil to earn Golfer of the Year honors. The senior from Villorba, Italy, completed her collegiate career by finishing tied for eighth place at the NCAA Championships as Arizona State tied for sixth overall. Molinaro shot a 3-over 291 to secure her eighth top-10 finish of the season. Named to both the NGCA All-America and Pac-12 All-Conference first teams, she never finished outside the top-20 and finished the year ranked fourth by Golfweek/Sagarin. Molinaro tied for second at the Pac-12 Championships as ASU finished fifth. At the NCAA East Regionals, she was 19th while the Sun Devils advanced to their 21st consecutive NCAA Championships with a sixth-place finish. Molinaro led all Pac-12 players with a 72.33 average.
Lee, the NGCA Freshman of the Year, is the fourth UCLA player to earn Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Hailing from Silverdale, Wash., Lee posted six top-10 finishes and won her first collegiate crown at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in April. An NGCA All-America first team member, Lee tied for 12th at the Pac-12 Championships. She finished in a tie for 16th at the NCAA West Regional as the Bruins overcame a six-shot deficit entering the final round to tie for first and advance to the NCAA Championships. Lee posted a tie for 29th at the NCAA Championships as UCLA placed eighth. Lee was second in the Conference after Molinaro with a 72.50 average and finished the season ranked sixth nationally by Golfweek/Sagarin.
Forsyth has been named Coach of the Year for the fifth time her career after also receiving the award in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2011. The NGCA West Region Coach of the Year as well, Forsyth led the top-ranked Bruins to seven tournament wins this season, tying a school record. UCLA also recorded seven team wins in 2003-04 and 2008-09. The victory at the NCAA West Regional was the 47th in Forsyth’s 13th year leading the program. It was also the Bruins’ seventh NCAA Regional title in her tenure. Three of Forsyth’s golfers earned NGCA All-America honors. Lee along with Lee Lopez were named to the first team while Tiffany Lua earned second-team honors. Ani Gulugian was named honorable mention.
