WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC successfully defended its Pac-10 title and have now won three of the last four titles. The Trojans scored well in the sprints and the jumps and came up big in the hammer throw by taking the top four spots to tally 154 points to edge STANFORD (122.5) and ARIZONA STATE (101).

However, Stanford captured their fourth NCAA title with 72 points to upend defending champion Arkansas (59 points). ARIZONA placed sixth and USC finished seventh. Stanford's Brent Hauser paced the Cardinal with a pair of NCAA individual titles (5,000 and 10,000 meters), while teammate Gabe Jennings added a title in the 1,500 meters. Other Pac-10 athletes winning NCAA titles included Arizona's Patrick Ndwuimana (800 meters) and, Esko Mikkola (javelin), CALIFORNIA's Bevan Hart (decathlon) and USC's Felix Sanchez (400-meter hurdles).

WASHINGTON's Ja'Warren Hooker was named the Pac-10 Track and Field Athlete of the Year after capturing both the 100-meter (10.19) and 200-meter (20.39) titles at the Pac-10 Championships. This season, Hooker set Washington school records in the 200 meters (20.23) and 400 meters (44.91) to go with his 100 meter record (10.18) he set as a freshman. He placed sixth in the 200 meters (20.78) at the NCAA Championships.

OREGON's Jason Boness was tabbed the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year. He won the Pac-10 high jump title with a school record leap of 2.26m/7-5. He finished in a tie for seventh (2.19m/7-2 1/4) at the NCAA championships.

USC's Ron Allice and Stanford's Vin Lananna shared Coach of the Year honors. It was the third coaching honor for Allice in the last four years. The honor for Lananna is his first in the sport of track and field.
