BERKELEY - Cal-UCLA Game Notes

California defeated UCLA 46-38 today in front of 53,000 fans at Memorial Stadium in a dramatic overtime game. With the victory, Cal improves to 2-4 overall (1-2 Pac-10) on the season, while UCLA drops to 4-2 overall (1-1 Pac-10). UCLA now holds a 45-24-1 edge in a rivalry that dates back to 1933. With today's victory, the Golden Bears have defeated the Bruins in back-to-back years for the first time since Cal put together a five-game winning streak against UCLA from 1990-94 (last season Cal shutout UCLA 17-0 in LA).

Offensive Explosion for the Bears

The 46 points scored by the Bears in today's game are the most a Cal team has scored in a game since the Bears scored 56 points in a 56-55 victory vs. Arizona on November 2, 1996. Cal gained 359 total yards and had 18 first downs in today's game. The Bears were especially productive on third-down, converting 8-of-18 third downs (44.4%) for first downs in today's game.

First Overtime Game for the Bears Since 1997

The Bears played their first overtime game since losing a 41-38 contest at Arizona on November 15, 1997. The last overtime game played at Memorial Stadium was on November 2, 1996, when the Bears came away with a 56-55 victory vs. Arizona in four overtime periods.

Turnovers Make Game More Interesting

Both the Bears and the Bruins had trouble holding onto the ball in today's game. The Bears had four turnovers (1 interception, 3 fumbles) resulting in 21 Bruin points, while the Bruins had three interceptions resulting in 7 points for the Bears.

Nnamdi Asomugha made his first career interception in the second quarter when he stepped in front of a Cory Paus pass and returned it 31 yards for a Golden Bears touchdown to give the Bears a 21-7 lead. The last time a Cal player returned an interception for a touchdown was on November 13, 1999 when Deltha O'Neal returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown vs. Oregon.

Joe Igber - Receiver or Running Back?

Although Joe Igber may be listed as a tailback, he did the majority of his damage against the Bruins as a receiver today. Igber caught two touchdowns today: a 23 yard touchdown reception in the 1st quarter and a 36 yard touchdown reception in the 2nd quarter. Igber caught five passes for 126 yards and rushed for 49 more yards on the ground. He also ran in the winning touchdown to give the Bears the victory in the third overtime period. Late in the fourth quarter, Igber converted a crucial third-down for the Bears deep in their own territory on a reception to keep alive Cal's final drive of the game in regulation.

Andre Carter Continues Dominant Season

After recently being named one of 12 semifinalists for the 2000 Rotary Lombardi Award, Cal senior defensive end Andre Carter proved his worth, wreaking havoc in the offensive backfield with every snap and racking up six total tackles including one sack for 10 yards. Carter moves into fourth place on the Cal career list in sacks with 22.5, and he needs only two more to move into third place (Brandon Whiting had 24.5 sacks from 1994-97). Carter is No. 6 on the Cal career tackles for loss list with 44.0 and needs 3.5 more to move into a firth-place tie with Ron Rivera (47.5 from 1980-83).
