Oregon's Courtney Nagle Advances to Final Round

The University of Oregon women's tennis players continued to battle Saturday at the San Diego Fall Classic, hosted by San Diego State.
In the semifinals of Flight D, Oregon's Courtney Nagle defeated Emelie Akerbrant-Bengtsson of San Diego State in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Lindsey Hedberg of San Diego State defeted Oregon's Monika Gieczys in three matches, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 in Flight A, while in Flight C, the Aztes' Silvia Tornier defeated the Ducks' newcomer Vickie Gunnarson 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Also, in Flight C of the semifinals, Oregon's Adaline Arnaud fell to San Diego State's Julie Chidley 6-1, 6-4.
'We are working our kinks out,' fifth-year Oregon coach Jack Griffin said. 'We performed well and played hard, but we still need to improve. This is our first event of the season and I think we look a lot better than the last couple years.'
Janice Nyland lost 5-7, 6-0, 7-6 to University of Santa Barbara's Ann Marie Lenz in the Flight A consolation round, while Jeanette Mattsson defeated Shannon Wilkins of UCSB in straight-sets (6-2, 6-2). In Flight A of doubles, San Diego State's Katja Karrento and Whitney Wells defeated the Ducks' duo of Nyland and Gunnerson 8-3. In the Flight A consolation round, Oregon's Nagle and Monika Gieczys defeated San Diego's by default, while in the Flight B main draw, the Ducks' Arnaud and Mattsson fell to San Diego State's Katey Becker and Erin Polowski 8-3.
Play resumes Sunday at 9 a.m. at the SDSU Tennis Center.
