Oct. 14, 2000

AMES, Iowa -- Temperatures in the 80s, longer distances, and much of the best competition from around the nation met the Washington State men's and women's cross country team at the 28th Memorial Cross Country Classic Pre-National Invitational.

The WSU women finished 36th out of 56 teams running the 6,000 meter course while the Cougar men's team were 38th out 53 squads on the 10,000 meter course. BYU won the women's race while Colorado won the men's race. Among Pacific-10 Conference schools, Stanford's women were second and the Cardinal men were third.

WSU junior Ryan Gilmore was the top Cougar woman placer at 104th. Top placer for the WSU men was Oscar Franco-Parra finished 53rd.

'Oscar, Jon Welsh and Kyle Barker ran well today but most of the team started the race running conservatively,' Cougar coach James Li said. 'There are a lot of people at the back of the pack and Scott Johnson got caught back there. The 10k distance really kind of freaked out the freshman. The course is 100 percent grass so it was kind of slow.'

WSU's next competition will be at the Pac-10 Conference Championships, October 28, at Seattle.
