Oct. 14, 2000
STONE MOUNTAIN, GA - ITA All-American Championships
John Paul Fruttero made a gallant effort over the past three days, defeating four opponents including the No. 1 seed, Brian Vahaly of Virginia, on his way to the semifinals of the championship tournament.
The streak ended when Fruttero lost to Southern Methodist's Genius Chidzikwe in the semifinals of the tournament today 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. After winning the first set, it seemed Fruttero would come out the victor, however Chidzikwe put on a strong show in the final two sets as he went on to defeat Fruttero and advance to the championship.
Along with Robert Kowalczyk and Ben Miles, John Paul Fruttero and the sophomore class are making a statement that the younger Bears on this team will be strong leaders in the events to come. Fruttero and the men's team will play in the next major tournament, the ITA Championships, Oct. 28-31 here in Berkeley.
