Oct. 17, 2000
PORTLAND, Ore. - Three Beavers tallied double-figure kills as the Oregon State volleyball team defeated Portland, 3-1, in non-conference action Tuesday. Game scores were 15-11, 15-1, 9-15, and 15-2.
'It wasn't the sharpest match we've played, but we'll take it,' said coach Nancy Somera.
Gina Schmidt led OSU with 16 kills and 13 digs while posting a .371 hitting percentage for the night. Her double-double was her 12th of the season.
Joscelyn Hannaford also turned in a double-double for OSU, finishing with 10 kills and 12 digs. Michele Solomon had 10 or more kills for the fifth consecutive match, this time hitting .409 with 11 kills.
After taking the victory in game one, OSU (14-6) cruised to an easy win in game two by hitting .378 - its highest mark of any of the four games.
In game three, OSU and UP each had 15 kills, but the Pilots (5-13) hit .295 to OSU's .190 mark to capture the win and avoid the sweep.
Portland opened game four with a service ace, but the Pilots couldn't maintain the momentum. UP had nine of its 21 hitting errors in the fourth game and managed just three kills for a -.222 mark. Meanwhile, OSU's hitting improved from game three as the Beavers hit .368 to finish out the match.
'In game four, we played with the intensity we needed to play with the whole match,' Somera said. 'We need to work on not getting lazy the second half of the season and keep pushing through and staying sharp mentally.'
The Beavers, who hit .277 on the night, posted 61 kills to UP's 45 and also outdug the Pilots, 66-49. However, OSU had just two blocks for its lowest blocking total of the year, while Portland had 10 blocks. Portland also had six aces to OSU's three.
