LOS ANGELES - The WSU women's tennis team is on their way home after suffering some tough losses in the Rivera All-American Championships, Tuesday.
Junior Erica Perkins (Seattle) downed Carolina Mayorga of Kentucky, 6-3, 6-3, in the first qualifying round of competition. Perkins was then eliminated from the tournament after suffering a loss to Arizona State's Megan Yeats 4-6, 6-7 (4) in the second round.
'We were very pleased with Erica's play,' head coach Cari Groce said. 'Her second round was extremely tough. She played great singles.'
Team captain Tamara Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) and partner freshman Stacy McKenna (North Bend, Ore.) suffered a tough loss, 1-6, 5-7, to UC Irvine's duo of Seymour and Chappell in the first qualifying round of doubles competition.
Perkins and senior Ana Moura (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), who found themselves in the draw Tuesday morning, were also defeated in the first round of competition. The UCLA duo of Fisher and Marinova defeated the Cougar duo 7-5, 6-1.
'Next to the NCAA tournament, this is one of the toughest tournaments in the country,'Groce said. 'All the players here are tough. Doubles may not have gone as well as it could have, but we played tough tennis. I think it was a good opportunity for these four girls to get some tough matches under their belts. I am looking forward to the ITA Regionals next month. These players are only getting better, and the players back home are training very hard. They are excited about the regionals and so am I.'
The Cougars will travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to compete in the ITA Regionals November 9-12.
