Volleyball Falls Short in Four Games To Arizona State

SEATTLE - A day after setting her school's record for kills in a match with 39, Arizona State outside hitter Amanda Burbridge recorded 38 to lead the Sun Devils past Washington in volleyball action, 15-8, 15-6, 10-15, 15-13, Saturday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz. With the loss, the Huskies fell to 5-13 overall and 1-10 in conference play, while the Sun Devils improved to 14-7 overall and 7-5 in the Pac-10.
The Huskies fell for the second straight night in the final game 13-15 and were unable to push the match to a fifth game. The UW, however, got a number of outstanding performances in the hard fought match with four Huskies recording double-doubles. Sophomore swing hitter Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) tied a career and season high with 17 kills and 15 digs, while junior setter Britni Churnside (Eugene, Ore.) logged 60 assists and 21 digs. Junior swing hitter Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif.) also hit a career-best .619 with 14 kills on 21 attempts and mainstay quick hitter Lisa Underhill (Vista, Calif.) contributed 15 kills and 11 blocks assists, just one short of the school record. Freshman Kara Bjorklund (Olympia, Wash.) tallied a career-best eight blocks and 10 kills, while sophomore Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) had a career-high four aces and 13 kills.
In addition to Burbridge's 38-kill effort, the Sun Devils got 67 assists from setter Cheryl Anglin and 19 digs from both Burbridge and Jami Coughlin.
The Huskies outblocked their opponents for the fourth straight match with 15.5 team blocks to the Sun Devils 13.
The Huskies hit the road once more for an Apple Cup match up at Washington State next Friday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m. The match will air live on Fox Sports Net. The UW will then head home to play host to non-conference foe Idaho State, Sunday, Oct. 29, at noon.
