Men's Tennis Hosts ITA Regional Championships

Cal hosts the ITA Regional Championships Saturday through Tuesday at both the Hellman Tennis Courts and the Channing Tennis Facility. Individual competition begins Saturday, Oct. 28 with the first two rounds of singles and doubles play, in addition to the first round of the singles consolation. Singles competition begins at 8 a.m. and doubles matches will begin at 2:30 p.m. at both sites. Two rounds of the tournament will take place daily, leaving the championship matches for singles, doubles, and the consolation on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

In addition to Cal, schools competing include Stanford, Washington, Fresno State, Oregon, St. Mary's, Sacramento State, Santa Clara, Pacific and Nevada. Players from each school will compete in a 128-player main draw in singles, and a 64-player draw in doubles. Until the finals, all doubles matches will play an 8-game pro set in addition to all singles and doubles consolation matches.

In singles competition, Cal boasts three seeded players who will receive a bye during the first round of play. Seeded No. 2 is sophomore John Paul Fruttero who is coming off a semifinal appearance at the ITA All-American and will play his first match at 12 noon on Saturday. Freshman Balazs Veress, seeded No. 8, will play his first match in the second round at 10:45 a.m. Saturday. In his last tournament, the T. Rowe Price Clay Court Championships, Veress advanced to the quarterfinals of the first leg of the ITA Grand Slam. No. 13 Adrian Barnes will compete against Gonzaga's Alex McBarnet on Saturday in the second round of competition at 11:30 a.m.

Other Cal players who will receive a bye during first round of singles play are junior Hiro Nakamura, junior Andrey Vinogradsky, sophomore Robert Kowalczyk, freshman Wayne Wong and senior Scott Kintz.

In doubles competition, Cal's tandems of Adrian Barnes/Scott Kintz and Robert Kowalczyk/Balazs Veress are seeded in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. The tandem of Hiro Nakamura/Wayne Wong will also compete as Cal's third team in doubles. All three Cal teams will receive a bye in the first round.

Results will be posted twice daily, Saturday through Monday. Final results will be posted Tuesday.
