Men's Soccer Blanks Oregon State, 2-0
Oct. 27, 2000
Berkeley, Calif. - The California men's soccer team continued its winning-streak, with a 2-0 win over the visiting Oregon State Beavers. With the win, the Bears improve to 5-9-1 overall, 2-2-1 in the Pac-10. The loss drops the Beavers to 7-8-1, 1-4-1 in conference.
The Austin Ripmaster to Kendall Simmonds combination worked so well the first time, they decided to repeat the effort. Simmonds scored the only two goals on the day. In the 69th-minute, he scored on a 14-yard blast to the far post, past a diving Peter Billmeyer. Ripmaster assisted on the play.
Simmonds again took a pass from Ripmaster in the 75th-minute, and chipped the ball over the keeper's head from 12-yards out, for the Bears second score on the day. With the two goals, Simmonds now leads Cal in scoring with 11 points, on five goals and one assist.
'This was a hard fought win,' said head coach Kevin Grimes. 'After we went into halftime 0-0, we felt that the team that wanted it most was going to come out with the victory. I think with the home field advantage, it put us over the top. Simmonds displayed two elements of his game today in power and placement. He was the difference in the second half.'
Cal keeper Brian Walker had another outstanding game, tallying his third shutout on the season. He ended the day with 6 saves to increase his season total to 40, second best in the conference.
Billmeyer recorded two saves for the Beavers in net.
Cal was outshot in the match by a 12-10 margin, and 7-5 in the second half.
The Bears are now 4-1 at home and continues their home schedule with a 1 p.m. match on Sunday against the Stanford Cardinal (13-1-1, 4-1).
