Men's Soccer Slips Against Gonzaga, 4-1

Oct. 29, 2000

CORVALLIS, Ore. - - The Oregon State men's soccer team lost its non-conference match against the Gonzaga Zags 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The loss was OSU's second consecutive setback, and dropped the Beavers to 7-9-1 overall (1-4-1 Pacific-10).

Gonzaga (9-5-0) led the contest 1-0 at the half on the strength of a Brian Ching goal that was assisted by Jason Kuska at 20:05. Kuska would go on to set a Lorenz Field record with seven points on the day after scoring the next three goals for Gonzaga. Kuska's three goals was also a Lorenz field record. The old mark for points was four, and the former record for goals was two, both feats were accomplished several times.

The Beavers surrendered a second score to the Zags at 50:42 when Kuska put is first goal in the back of the net.

OSU answered in the 65th minute when Ben Roth scored his first goal of the season off a Josh Elbaum corner kick. After the ball was deflected once, Roth headed it past GU's Mike McCarthy.

'There were a lot of bad decisions in the back today,' OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. 'Even when we were down 2-0, we got a goal back and had 25 minutes left and we basically handed a goal to them on a bad pass. This is what happens when you don't do the elementary things. We didn't look good today.'

Kuska put two more nails in the coffin when he scored in the 79th and 82nd minutes after Billmeyer charged the ball both times and was unable to come up with it.

Sunday's game was only the second time this year OSU has surrendered more than two goals in a game.

'Defensively we were off, offensively, we missed some opportunities,' Taylor said. 'The biggest thing was that they outworked us. It was very evident - anyone that was watching the game could see that we got outplayed.

'That's the first key element of any game, is a desire to outwork the other team,' Taylor said. 'I told our guys in the pregame talk that (Gonzaga) would be a scrappy, hard-working team. We didn't come ready to match that, and when you don't, you're already behind.'

The Beavers' final home match of the year will be Sunday, Nov. 5, when they host the Washington Huskies at 1 p.m.
