Women's Soccer Drops Match With WSU 1-0 In Overtime
Oct. 29, 2000
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Deka DeWitt's goal at the 100:31 mark lifted Washington State past Oregon State 1-0 in Sunday afternoon's Pacific-10 conference women's soccer match.
The Cougars upped their record to 12-6-0 and 4-4-0 in the Pac-10 while the Beavers fell to 6-11-2 overall and 0-5-2 in the conference.
Washington State dominated action, out-shooting the Beavers 15-1 in regulation, but the Cougars were unable to put any points on the board.
With 20 seconds remaining in the second half the Cougs had their best opportunity to end the match when Beth Childs' corner kick found Brianne Carmody in the box. Carmody headed the ball toward the goal but it sailed off the crossbar. Carmody had a second chance to put the rebound away but shot just wide, as time ran out in regulation.
Most of the action in overtime was played in front of the Oregon State goal. WSU had five corner kicks and five shots in the period with DeWitt's goal finding a home inside the left post after a downfield pass from Katrina Stroh.
The goal was DeWitt's second game-winner of the season and her 12th goal of the year.
Senior goalkeeper Jerika Duran played during the second half and overtime period for the Beavers while fellow senior Elizabeth Pease got the start on senior-day at Paul Lorenz Field. Duran finished the match with four saves.
The Beavers had just two shots on the afternoon, both from sophomore Morgan Crabtree.
OSU head coach Steve Fennah was disappointed with his team's performance after such a competitive game last Friday against No. 2 ranked Washington.
'We've played much better than that this year. Today we played pretty ugly. Washington State battled hard and we didn't compete, but we'll move on from here.'
Oregon State finishes its season on the road with a match Friday at No.7 California and then a Sunday contest at No. 13 Stanford. Game-time on Friday is set for 3 p.m. while Sunday's contest will kickoff at 10:30 a.m.
