Archuleta Named Semifinalist for <i>Football News'</i> Defensive Player of the Year

TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior linebacker Adam Archuleta has been named one of 15 semifinalists for the 2000 Football News' Defensive Players of the Year. The list will be trimmed to five finalists on Nov. 20 with the official announcement of the winner coming on Dec. 6. Six defensive lineman, four linebackers and five defensive backs make up the list of 15 semifinalists.

The recipients of the Offensive and Defensive Player-of-the-Year awards will then be honored on March 6 at the National Athletics Awards ceremony in Detroit, which will be televised live by Fox Sports Net.

A preseason favorite for Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, Archuleta leads the Pac-10 in tackles this season with 87, an average of 10.9 tackles per game. Of those tackles, 77 percent are solo stops (67 of 87). He has paced the team in tackles in four of the past six games and was second in the other two. Archuleta has had at least one tackle for loss in each of ASU's eight games this year, including three for a loss of 20 yards at UCLA, and ranks tied for sixth in the Pac-10 with 12 total TFL this season.

Archuleta is on the list of 11 semifinalists for the Dick Butkus Award which is annually presented to the nation's best linebacker.
