Oct. 30, 2000
This Week -- Head coach Todd Saldaa's UCLA men's soccer team (10-5-0, 1-4-0 in the Pac-10, ranked No. 21 by SoccerTimes.com) will travel to Washington (10-5-0, 4-1-0, ranked No. 20 by SoccerTimes.com and No. 25 by the NSCAA) for a Friday, Nov. 3 matchup at Husky Soccer Stadium at 7:00 pm. UCLA is coming off a 3-1 victory over Portland, while Washington is coming off a 4-1 loss to Portland.
UCLA In The Rankings -- After a split last weekend, the Bruins dropped to 14th in the media poll and 21st in the SoccerTimes.com poll and remain unranked in the NSCAA poll.
A Look At The Huskies -- Washington is coached by former Bruin assistant coach Dean Wurzberger in his ninth season. Ben Somoza leads the team with 17 points, followed by Bryn Ritchie with 12. After winning six straight, the Huskies have now lost two of their last three.
Last Meeting -- The Huskies came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Bruins, 3-2. Ben Somoza scored the game-winning goal with 19 seconds left on the clock. Somoza also assisted on UW's two other goals. McKinley Tennyson Jr. and Shaun Tsakiris scored the goals for UCLA. UCLA still leads the overall series, 6-5-2, but are 1-3 in games at Washington.
Tennyson Up For M.A.C. Award, Hermann Trophy -- Forward McKinley Tennyson Jr. (Indianapolis, IN) has been selected as one of 15 nominees for the Missouri Athletic Club Collegiate Player of the Year Award and for the Hermann Trophy. Tennyson remains one of the nation's leaders in goals per game (0.93, tied for 14th place). He has totaled 13 goals and 29 points in just 14 games played and is nearing UCLA's Top 10 list for career goals (38) and career points (97). He needs just one more point to move into a tie for 10th place on the charts with Tim Ngubeni and two goals to tie Ante Razov for 10th in career goals.
Tsakiris Moves Up Assists Chart -- Playmaker Shaun Tsakiris (Saratoga, CA) has moved into UCLA's Top 5 list for career assists, tying for fifth place with 30. Tsakiris' next target on the Top 10 assist list is third-place Dale Ervine and Fesseha Wolde-Emmanuel, both with 35. Tsakiris has had his finest offensive season in 2000, reaching new career-highs in goals (nine, including four game-winners) and points (26) and ranking in the Top 20 nationally in assists per game (0.62, 17th place).
Others Joining Tennyson-Tsakiris Scoring Act -- When two players, McKinley Tennyson Jr. and Shaun Tsakiris, are accounting for 63% of the team's goal production, it's always an added bonus when others join in on the action. In UCLA's 3-1 win over Portland Oct. 28, sophomores Jimmy Frazelle and Chadd Davis each picked up their second goals of the season, as did freshman Leonard Griffin against Cal State Fullerton Oct. 26.
Davis Makes Most Of Starting Opportunity -- Sophomore Chadd Davis (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) has made the most of his playing opportunities the past two weeks. Davis earned his first career start Oct. 22 at Oregon State and scored his first career goal in the sixth minute to tie the game at 1-1. Davis had played in just three games in two years entering the contest. He scored his second goal of the season in the Bruins' 3-1 win over Portland Oct. 28, tallying a goal in the ninth minute. Davis now has four points in just five games played, an average of .8 points per game, third-best on the team.
