Barnes Advances to ITA Finals
Oct. 31, 2000
BERKELEY, CA - ITA Regional Semifinals
No. 13 seed Adrian Barnes went head to head against teammate John Paul Fruttero, the No. 2 seed in the four-day tournament. Barnes came out the victor with a 6-2, 7-6(5) victory over the sophomore from San Marino.
Barnes took the first set from Fruttero 6-2 with consistent play and few unforced errors. Fruttero seemed to be caught off guard, never quite playing up the standard that he is used to. With unforced errors hurting the sophomore early, Fruttero could not bounce back from the experienced play of Barnes.
In the second set, Fruttero stepped up his play and grabbed a 3-2 lead with the help of a powerful serve and strong forehand. Barnes battled back, however, tying the set 4-4 before Fruttero took the fifth game with the help of two service aces. Barnes found himself in a hole, yet fought his way back into the set, forcing a 6-6 tie break against Fruttero.
With a 5-3 point advantage in the tie break, it seemed that Fruttero would force a third set against his teammate. Barnes, however, thought otherwise. The Cambridge, England native fought back to even the points at 5-5 and made accurate shots down the line to take the tie break, 7-5.
No. 13 Barnes will go up against No. 1 K.J. Hippensteel from Stanford tomorrow morning at the Hellman Tennis Courts. Hippensteel defeated his teammate (#7) Ali Ansari 6-3, 6-3 and now plays for a chance at the title against Barnes.
