No. 6 California Blanks Oregon State, 2-0
Nov. 3, 2000
BERKELEY - No. 6 California tied the school record for victories in a season at 16 with its 2-0 victory over Oregon State Friday at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears improved to 16-2-1 and 6-2 in the Pac-10, while the Beavers fall to 6-12-2 and 0-6-2 in league play.
'We only got two goals, but created a lot of opportunities,' said Cal coach Kevin Boyd. 'We got a chance to play 22 players. Everyone who went in played well. We feel our subs our doing a good job for us.
'Our back line has done it all year,' said Boyd. 'The defense didn't allow any good chances. There are a lot of years of experiences back there for us - two fifth years, one third year and a fourth-year goalkeeper.'
Senior midfielder Natalie Stuhlmueller tallied the eventual game-winning goal in the fifth minute with a 10-yard strike from the left side. Sophomore midfielder Brittany Kirk, who was named to Soccer America's Team of the Week this week, fended off several defenders in front of the goal to knock the ball clear to Stuhlmueller and earn the assist.
Sophomore forward Laura Schott tallied an insurance goal for the Bears in the 36th minute off a through ball from senior defender Tami Pivnick. The goal was Schott's 23rd of the season (47 season points), tying U.S. national team member Joy Fawcett for the school record for goals in a season. Schott began the week as the nation's leader for goals per game at 1.22.
There was no scoring after halftime, but Cal outshot OSU, 7-1 in the second stanza and 18-3 overall for the game. With the NCAA Tournament beginning next week and Cal dominating possession, Boyd took advantage of the opportunity to use 22 players in the game. Cal reserve midfielder Kristi Sullivan had her potential first goal of the season waved off due to offsides in the closing two minutes of the game.
Cal closes out the regular season Sunday against Oregon at noon at Edwards Stadium.
