Wolvert Scores 20 as Ducks Cruise, 85-56, in Exhibition Tune-Up
Nov. 3, 2000
EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's basketball team opened the preseason Friday night with a 85-56 exhibition victory over RTU Clondica (Riga, Latvia) before 3,551 fans at McArthur Court.
Senior forward Angelina Wolvert led all players with 20 points on 7-of-7 shooting. She also grabbed five rebounds and had a perfect night (6 of 6) at the free-throw line. Anete Brice led RTU Clondica with 16 points.
Turnovers plagued the Ducks, particularly in the first half, but Oregon's depth on the bench helped iron out the wrinkles in the second half. Freshman Cathrine Kraayeveld made an immediate impact in her first game as a Duck with seven points and three rebounds. Also contributing to Oregon's win was Ndid Unaka, Jamie Craighead and Kourtney Shreve with seven points apiece.
'We still have some fine-tuning to do,' eighth-year Oregon coach Jody Runge said. 'We need to work on our timing, defending the ball better, blocking out, the little things. We are where we want to be early, considering the losses we've had at the perimeter.'
Also in double-digits for Oregon were seniors Brianne Meharry (13) and Jenny Mowe (10). The Ducks' Alyssa Frederick and Meharry led in rebounding, eight and seven a piece, respectively. Jamie Craighead led the Ducks in assists with nine, while also contributing seven points.
RTU Clondica's Agnese Brasmane scored 15 points and led the team in rebounds with seven, while teammate Selga Alksne pulled down six rebounds and contributed five assists. RTU Clondica made all 18 of its free throw attempts.
Oregon senior guard Camber Ellingson also got into the scoring act, drilling a three-pointer from the corner with 1:06 left in the game.
Oregon plays its final exhibition against NWBL 4 on Nov. 15 in McArthur Court at 7 p.m. The defending Pac-10 champions open the regular season against Wisconsin at the GlaxoWellcome Invitational at Raleigh, North Carolina on Nov. 18.
