Nov. 6, 2000
EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon men's basketball team started the 2000-01 season strong with a 102-59 victory over Korabel, a Basketball Travelers team from Nikolaev, Ukraine. Senior Bryan Bracey and freshman James Davis led the way for the Ducks, scoring 21 points apiece. Oleksandr Rayevskyy led the Korabel squad in scoring with 26.
The Ducks shot 55.9 percent for the game (33-of-59). Oregon shot 49 percent (17-of-35) in the first half, and shot considerably better in the second half at 66.7 percent (16-of-24). The Ducks shot 54.5 percent from the three-point line.
The Ducks' Frederick Jones put up 15 points and led all players with seven rebounds. Oregon freshman Luke Jackson put in nine points in his first appearance as a Duck, and fellow freshman Luke Ridnour added seven points and seven assists.
'The freshmen did a good job,' said Oregon head coach Ernie Kent. 'Our leadership in [Bryan] Bracey and Freddie [Jones] and Anthony Norwood was awesome. Julius [Hicks] did a nice job. There's not a lot of negative things I can tell you, with the exception of, we still, in our minds, have a long way to go before we're anywhere close to being what I would call fine-tuning and clicking like a machine.'
The Korabel team shot 30.8 percent for the game (20-of-65). Oleksandr Chausov led his team with six rebounds.
Up next, Oregon plays another exhibition match against the Athletes in Action, on November 14th, 7:00 p.m. at McArthur Court.
