Oregon State-Arizona Preview

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State will try to keep alive its slim hopes of capturingits firstRose Bowl bid in 36 years when it travels to Tucson to face Arizona onSaturday.

The 10th-ranked Beavers (8-1, 5-1 Pac-10), who won their fourthstraightlast week with a 38-32 victory over California, still have a chance at atripto Pasadena if they win this week and beat Oregon the following week.

However, Oregon State would still need help in order to clinch itsfirstRose Bowl berth since 1965.

Even if the Beavers win their next two games, Washington would have toloseone of its last two against UCLA and Washington State. Oregon State wouldlosea tiebreaker with Washington by virtue of the Huskies' 33-30 victory overtheBeavers on Oct. 7.

Oregon State is led by running back Ken Simonton and quarterbackJonathanSmith. Simonton, a junior, became the first player in Pac-10 history to rushfor 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons. He has 1,288 yards and16touchdowns this season.

Simonton is also just the sixth Pac-10 rusher to accomplish the feat inanythree seasons, joining Anthony Davis and Charles White of SouthernCalifornia,Darrin Nelson of Stanford, Russell White of California and Napoleon KaufmanofWashington.

Last season, Simonton had 159 yards against Arizona in Oregon State's28-20victory.

Smith, a junior, has also had a big season for the Beavers, passing for1,991 yards and 14 touchdowns. He threw for 317 yards in last week's victoryover California.

Arizona (5-4, 3-3) is merely looking to become bowl eligible. TheWildcatsappeared to be in position to earn their first-ever Rose Bowl appearancethreeweeks ago, but after three straight conference losses by a combined 10points,are trying to salvage their season.

Arizona is led by quarterback Ortege Jenkins and running back ClarenceFarmer. Jenkins has passed for 892 yards and seven touchdowns, while Farmerhasled a balanced running attack with 396 yards and three touchdowns.

The Wildcats hold a 19-3-1 lead in the all-time series with theBeavers.Arizona, however, won last season's matchup as Smith threw for threetouchdowns.
