Nov. 14, 2000

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Civil War, a 104-year tradition between the fifth-ranked OregonDucksand the eighth-ranked Oregon State Beavers, will have added meaning thisseason, as the two teams vie for a trip to Pasadena on Saturday.

'It's going to be World War III,' said Oregon cornerback Rashad Bauman, keeping the trend of battle cliches going. 'There's going to be fights, sometalking ... whatever you could expect in a great college football game.'

The Ducks (9-1, 7-0 Pac 10) clinched at least a share of the conferencetitle when they beat California 25-17 for their 20th straight home win lastSaturday. It's only fitting that they'll have to beat their in-state rivalsatCorvallis to make it to the Rose Bowl.

But despite four wins, the Ducks have been struggling in their lastfourgames. Since Oct. 21 they have won by an average of four points- including awild 56-55 win over Arizona State on Oct. 28.

'There are no celebrations yet,' said Ducks offensive lineman LeeGundy.'Oregon State could still be a spoiler for us. I lost to Oregon State onceinmy life (1998), and it was the worst season of my life.'

The fate of the Beavers (9-1, 6-1) does not lie solely in their ownhands, however. Not only do they need to beat their rivals this weekend, but also aloss by Washington to Washington State to to find their way to Pasadena forthefirst time since 1965.

The Beavers kept their bowl dreams alive last weekend by handilybeatingArizona State 33-9.

The Beavers, 0-10 at Arizona going into the game, scored on their firstfivepossessions, including field goals of 23, 44 and 31 yards by Ryan Cesca, tolead 23-3 at halftime. Cesca also kicked a 30-yarder in the fourth quarter.

'We played outstanding defense,' said Oregon State coach DennisErickson, who has transformed one of the worst programs in college football into ateamthat could go to the Rose Bowl.

'It was probably our best game defensively. We pretty much stifledthem.'

Oregon State hasn't scored less than 30 points since a 28-20 win overNewMexico on Sept. 9.
