Amanda Burbridge And Jami Coughlin Named Academic All-Americans

Nov. 17, 2000

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State University volleyball standouts Amanda Burbridge and Jami Coughlin were named to the District VIII Verizon Academic All-America team Thursday.

Burbridge and Coughlin, who were named second-team District VIII Academic All-Americans last year and were also All-Pac-10 academic winners in 1999, are the leaders of the Sun Devil volleyball team who are currently 17-10 on the year and in a tie for fourth place in the Pac-10 conference.

Burbridge (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who is ranked second in the Pac-10 Conference and seventh nationally with 5.59 kills per game, has maintained a 3.43 GPA as a sociology major at Arizona State. The senior is set to graduate in May and will leave ASU as one of the best volleyball players in school history, ranking in the top three in career kills and in the top 10 in career digs. The outside hitter set a school record with 39 kills vs. Washington State on Oct. 20 and recently became only the 16th player in Pac-10 history, and second in ASU history, to surpass the 1,500-kill, 1,000-dig mark in a career.

Coughlin (Glendale, Ariz.), is currently ranked second in the conference with 3.93 digs per game and is the active leader in career digs among all Pac-10 players with 1,083. The junior outside hitter has maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA in Education.

The Pac-10 academic awards will be released later this month. The Sun Devil volleyball program has been awarded 21 all-conference academic selections since 1986, second among all conference schools trailing only Stanford (23).
