Men's Basketball Beats Mississippi Valley State In Opener, 85-70

EUGENE, Ore. - Bryan Bracey had 22 points and a career-high 12 rebounds asOregon used a 21-2 run in the second half to defeat Mississippi Valley State85-70 in the season opener for both teams.

Freddie Jones added 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting. His dunk during the runbrought a rare technical foul from the Oregon student manager for celebrating.

Dewayne Jefferson scored 26 points and hit five 3-pointers to lead the DeltaDevils.

Oregon took a 22-17 lead with 10:16 left in the first half, but MississippiValley State ran off the next 10 points. The Devils capped the run on a3-pointer by Jason Pruitt with 7:29 left to give his team its biggest lead ofthe game.

The Ducks tied it at 31-all on two free throws by Jones, then took the leadfor good on layup by Flo Hartenstein.

Oregon's decisive second-half run began with 19:23 to go, and ended on aputback by Bracey with 13:22 left to put the Ducks ahead 61-39.

Anthony Norwood had 15 points for the Ducks.

Jones added seven rebounds and six assists in his first game as the leaderof the Ducks, who made the NCAA tournament last season but lost their top threescorers - A.D. Smith, Alex Scales and Darius Wright.

Luke Ridnour, the team's most prized freshman recruit, struggled in hisdebut as the Ducks' point guard, missing all seven of his shots. He had fourpoints, two assists and six turnovers.
