Women's Basketball Upset By St. Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) - Jermisha Dosty scored 18 points and grabbed 18rebounds and her twin sister, Jerkisha, added 19 points and 10 rebounds as St.Mary's upset 12th-ranked Stanford 74-63 on Friday night in the opener for bothteams.

Julie Morris and Hilary Parker combined for another 16 points as the Gaelsbeat Stanford for the first time in six tries and delivered Michelle Jacoby avictory in her head coaching debut.

Bethany Donaphin scored 17 points for Stanford, which has lost three of itslast four openers, all on the road.

The Dosty twins, who helped the Gaels to a considerable rebounding advantage(47-32) over the taller Cardinal, combined to shoot 13-of-21 from the field.

St. Mary's led by 23 points, 52-29, when sophomore center Natalie Kelly sanktwo free throws at 12:28 of the second half.

The Cardinal responded with a 12-2 run, led by nine points by Donaphin andclosed to 54-41.

Lauren St. Clair, who scored 11 points, converted a four-point play with4:41 remaining to bring Stanford within 61-51, but St. Mary's scored the nexteight points and the Cardinal never got within 10 the rest of the way.

The Gaels were eight of 11 from the foul line in the final 3:30.

Stanford made just one of its first nine shots and shot 26 percent in thefirst half as the Gaels built an 11-point lead less than five minutes into thegame.

St. Mary's dominated the boards early, holding a 19-5 advantage at one pointin the first half.

Courtney Ferguson's 3-pointer with 2:05 left in the first half gave St.Mary's a 30-20 lead, but the Cardinal closed to within 30-23 by halftime.
