Nov. 21, 2000
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Oregon State outside hitter Gina Schmidt is among the 12 players named to the 2000 All-Pacific-10 volleyball team, the league announced Tuesday.
The junior from Beaverlodge, Alberta, ranks fourth in the Pac-10 for kills (4.41 kills per game) and is sixth in the league for digs (3.24 digs per game). She recently became just the third Oregon State player to record 500 kills in a single season, with 516 entering the final week of regular season play. She is also the first Beaver since 1996 to record 300 digs in a season. She currently ranks ninth on OSU's single-season charts with 379 digs with at least two matches remaining in the season.
Schmidt has had 20 or more kills in 12 matches this year, highlighted by a career-high 32 against Washington to set an OSU record for kills in a four-game match. She's had 10 or more kills in all but three matches. Defensively, she's tallied double-digit digs in 19 matches, including three 20-plus efforts. She's had 19 double-doubles for the year.
Schmidt is the first Beaver to earn All-Pac-10 honors since 1993 and the fourth overall. OSU has also had seven honorable mention selections, all between 1995 and 1999.
Arizona's Dana Burkholder was named Pac-10 Player of the Year, while USC's April Ross was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. USC interim head coach Jerritt Elliott and Arizona head coach David Rubio were named Pac-10 Co-Coaches of the Year.
