Three Huskies Named to Football News All-America Squad

Nov. 22, 2000

Seattle - Three Washington football players have been named to The Football News All-America team. Sophomore tight end Jerramy Stevens and senior offensive tackle Chad Ward were second-team selections while junior nose tackle Larry Tripplett was a third-team selection.

Stevens, who was named a freshman All-American last season, set a Washington single-season record for a tight end with 43 receptions in 2000. He totaled 600 receiving yards and scored three touchdowns. A total of 28 of his 43 catches this season resulted in a first down. Stevens is one of eight semifinalists for the John Mackey Award, presented to the nation's outstanding tight end.

Ward, a preseason All-America pick by several football publications, helped the Huskies to lead the Pac-10 in rushing with an average of 211.7 yards per game. That total currently ranks Washington 25th nationally in rushing. Washington was third in the Pac-10 in sacks allowed with just 25. Ward has started all 44 games during his Husky career.

Tripplett led Washington's defense with 11 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He finished the season with 38 total tackles. Tripplett also blocked three kicks this year. He was named the national defensive player of the week following the Huskies' 17-14 victory at Colorado.

Other Pac-10 players to earn All-America honors were California defensive tackle Andre Carter (first team), Oregon State tailback Ken Simonton (second team), UCLA wide receiver Freddie Mitchell (second team), Stanford linebacker Riall Johnson (second team), Arizona State tight end Todd Heap (third team), Oregon defensive back Rashad Bauman (third team) and California punter Nick Harris (third team).

The Football News will announce its Freshman All-America and All-Conference teams next week.
