Piscataway, N.J. - Washington State University senior Katie Nyseth was honored Friday as the 2000 Rutgers University Coca-Cola Classic Scholar Athlete Award recipient.

The award was selected by the tournament committee and comes with a $1,000 scholarship contribution made in Nyseth's name to Washington State. The Cougars (1-0) face George Washington (1-1) tomorrow at 10 a.m. Pacific in the opening game of the Classic.

Nyseth, a 5-foot-3 guard from Cheshire, Ore., is majoring in Biological Systems Engineering and carries a 3.86 GPA. She was honored last year as the College of Agriculture and the Biological Systems Engineering Junior of the Year. In addition, she was a 2000 Pacific-10 All-Academic Team selection. With 262 career assists, Nyseth ranks ninth on the Cougar's all-time assists list. She needs 11 assists to pass Shelley Patterson (272) for eighth place.

Depending on the outcome of the George Washington contest, WSU will face either Vermont or Rutgers Sunday in the tournament's consolation game at 10 a.m. Pacific or the championship game at noon.

After Sunday's game, the Cougars return to Pullman for their home opener, Thursday, Nov. 30 against BYU. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Friel Court.
