PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University women's volleyballteam was selected Sunday to participate in its seventh NCAA Division IWomen's Volleyball Championship Tournament in the past ten years.

WSU, 18-9 overall, 9-9 and tied for fifth in the Pacific-10 Conference, travels to University Park, Pennsylvania, to meet Tennessee (23-9) in aFriday, Dec. 1, first round match. Host Penn State (27-5) plays JamesMadison (21-9) in a first round match that same night. The winners ofthese matches meet in the second round Saturday night.

Penn State, the defending NCAA Volleyball Champion, is the number threeseed in the Pacific Region. USC is seeded first while Colorado State issecond and Florida was seeded fourth. WSU is the fifth seed in thePacific Region, Tennessee is 12th, and James Madison is seeded 15th.WSU, Penn State, and Tennessee were all at-large selections to the64-team tournament while James Madison received an automatic berth bywinning the Colonial Conference title. The Washington State Cougarswere among six Pacific-10 Conference teams selected for tournament play. The Big Ten and Big Twelve also placed six teams in the championshipbracket.

Washington State has met Tennessee only once in school history, a 3-2win at the 1988 Illinois State Invitational. The Lady Vols are coachedby former Stanford assistant, Rob Patrick. This is their fifth tripoverall and their first trip to the NCAA Championship tournament since1993.

'All I know about Tennessee is their coach is a former Stanfordassistant and they wear orange,' Cougar coach Cindy Fredrick said at thepost-selection press conference Sunday night in Pullman. 'We're notplaying their basketball team so we feel good about that. Penn State isalways a good team. They've been the Big Ten Champions, they've been tothe final four a couple times. Penn State will have a very, verypumped team and will be playing at Penn State so that will be some realstrong competition. We've only played them one other time and that wasthe year we were in the Elite Eight and they beat us 3-0.'

'It would be great to play at home with our crowd, but I know we cantake care of ourselves on the road,' team captain and All-Pac-10 playerLaToya Harris said. 'As long as we're going (to the NCAAs), I'm notdisappointed.'
