Men's Soccer To Host SMU On Saturday, Dec. 2 In National Quarterfinals

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford men's soccer team, coming off a 6-0 victory over Illinois-Chicago in the Second Round, will host Southern Methodist in a quarterfinal match of the 2000 Men's College Cup on Saturday, Dec. 2 at New Maloney Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
Stanford, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, enters the match at 18-2-1. Southern Methodist, the No. 6 seed, brings a 19-4-0 mark into quarterfinal play.
The winner of Saturday's match will advance to the 2000 Men's College Cup Semifinals, held on Dec. 8 at Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.
The Cardinal earned its second quarterfinal berth in program history with a 6-0 shutout of Illinois-Chicago on Saturday night. Senior forward Corey Woolfolk scored the first of his two goals at the 47:25 mark to ignite a six-goal, second-half outburst. Lee Morrison, Roger Levesque, Mike Murphy and Ryan Nelsen also scored for Stanford, while midfielder Derek Shanahan had a pair of assists. In Stanford's only previous quarterfinal appearance, the Cardinal won 3-0 at Virginia to advance to the 1998 National Semifinals.
Southern Methodist, which won its first Missouri Valley Conference regular season title, enters its eighth quarterfinal since 1985. The Mustangs have won a pair of home games thus far in the 2000 Tournament, defeating IUPUI 2-0 and Kentucky 3-1. Junior forward Mohamed Fahim is amongst the national leaders with 23 goals, seven assists and 53 points. SMU, which has outscored opponents 79-22, has five other players with more than 20 points: Luchi Gonzalez (12 g, 14 a, 53 pts), Diego Walsh (10 g, 14 a, 34 pts), Matt Whiteley (10 g, 6 a, 26 pts), Bret Corbin (8 g, 5 a, 21 pts) and Carl Bussey (9 g, 2 a, 20 pts).
Ticket prices are $10 dollars for adults and $6 dollars for students (with a valid ID), children (under 13) and seniors (over 60).
