Swimming In Fourth At Speedo Cup

Dec. 1, 2000

LONG BEACH, Calif. - - The Oregon State women's swim team is in fourth place at the Speedo Cup thanks in part to a school record performance by the 400-yard medley relay team and solid performances by the rest of the squad on Thursday at the Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Calif.

USC leads the event with 323 points, while OSU tallied 227 and trails UCLA by 11 and Hawaii by 41 with competition remaining on Friday and Saturday.

The Beavers were within .78 seconds of setting school records in three different events in the opening round.'It's been a very good meet so far,' OSU coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'We need to capitalize on opportunities to set school records in the next two days.'

The 400 medley relay team of Suzanne Starkey, Birte Steven, Bonnie Renwick, and Arianna Higuera set the new school mark as they cruised to a time of 3:49.01 to finish fourth. The team swamped the old time of 3:51.22, set last year by Magda Modelska, Kristen Martinec, Paula Finlay, and Higuera.

Other OSU highlights included Naya Higashijima's third-place finish in the 500 freestyle. The sophomore finished in 4:55.76.

'We were a little tired today,' Podkoscielny said. 'Normally, we arrive two days before the meet, but because of school and dead week, we didn't get in until the day before. They handled it well though, and we're looking forward to Friday and Saturday.'

Steven, Starkey, and Renwick each had personal bests on the day. Steven's time of 2:05.84 in the 200 individual medley was over five seconds better than her previous best, and put her second on OSU's list of top-10 performers in that event, 0.38 off the school record held by teammate Paula Finlay.

Starkey posted a personal best of 24.32 in the 50 freestyle to jump into sixth place on the OSU top-10 list, while Renwick notched a 24.36 for seventh on the list. Higuera led the Beavers with a seventh-place finish in the event in 24.02, while Renwick was 12th and Starkey 17th. Although Starkey's time was faster than Renwick's, Starkey had been placed in a lower final heat due to a slower preliminary time and could not finish higher than 17th.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Higuera, Renwick, Starkey, and Erin Buckley took fourth with a time of 1:36.59, just 0.09 off the school record.
