Women's Volleyball Falls To No. 14 UCSB In NCAA Second Round Action

Stanford's Logan Tom notched a career-high 39 kills as No. 18 Stanford fell to No. 14 UC-Santa Barbara, 3-2, tonight in the Thunderdome in NCAA second round action. Game scores were 15-9, 14-16, 8-15, 16-14, 14-16.

Stanford ends the season with a 19-12 record while the Gauchos improve to 25-7.

Stanford posted a 4-2 lead to open game one, forcing a UCSB timeout. The Cardinal would push the lead to 10-2 before the Gauchos went on a five point run to close the gap to 7-10. But Stanford kept the pressure on, winning game one 15-9 on two consecutive kills by Tara Conrad. Conrad had seven kills for the game.

The Gauchos came out fired up building a 7-2 lead, taking advantage of several Cardinal miscues. UCSB continued to build on its lead, pulling away 11-3, forcing a Stanford timeout. The Cardinal then scored seven straight points of their own to close the gap to 10-11. The Gauchos extended their lead to 13-10 but Stanford answered to pull within one at 12-13 on a block by Jennifer Detmer and Logan Tom. They would tie the game on a UCSB hitting error. A service ace by Tom would get Stanford to game point but the Gauchos tied it up on a block and reached game point on a kill. Stanford would hold off three game points before falling 14-16.

With UCSB leading 4-3, the Gauchos went on a three point run to build a 7-3 advantage in game three. Stanford pulled to within two at 6-8 on a kill by Tom to force a UCSB timeout. They tied the game up on a block by Tom and Detmer. But UCSB would string together three consecutive points to build an 11-8 lead. The Gauchos would close out the game on a four point run taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

With game four knotted at 4-4, Stanford got some timely blocking and UCSB errors to pull ahead 8-4. After the Gauchos scored two to get to 6-8, the Cardinal slowly pulled ahead 11-7. But UCSB kept it close pulling to within three at 9-12. With Stanford holding a slim 13-11 lead, a Cardinal hitting error put UCSB within one at 12-13. A UCSB block tied the game at 13-13. UCSB got to match and game point on a Gaucho kill. Stanford held off two game points to tie the game on a kill by Tom. A UCSB hitting error and a Tom kill gave Stanford the 16-14 victory, forced a fifth and deciding game.

Stanford and UCSB traded points until, tied at 4-4, the Gauchos scored three consecutive point to pull ahead 7-4. Stanford tied up the game at 9-9 but once again UCSB scored three quick points to go up 12-9. But the Cardinal would not give up knotting the game once again at 13-13. A block solo by Jennifer Detmer gave Stanford the 14-13 edge. But UCSB came back to tie it up at 14-14. A block and a service ace would give the Gauchos the 16-14 win and a trip to the next round.

Logan Tom set career highs in kills (39), attempts (83) and digs (23) on the night. Her 39 kills was two shy of the school record. Tara Conrad had 25 kills, setting a new career high as well. Jennifer Detmer has 12 blocks on the evening to tie her career high.

No. 14 UCSB def. No. 18 Stanford, 3-2.
