Watson Takes Third at Cliff Keen Invitational

Dec. 2, 2000

STATE LINE, Nev. - The University of Oregon wrestling team finished action at the 19th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational with a 10th-place team finish. Individually, the Ducks scored one runner-up honor and two third-place finishes among the five that advanced to final-day action.

'We wrestled well, but we have a lot of little things to keep working at to get better,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'We didn't put together the whole tournament that we're capable of. We can compete at this level of competition, and there's a lot of little things we need to keep working on - but all stuff that's fixable. We're looking to improve on this against Oregon State and at the Tournament of Champions.'

At 133 pounds, sophomore Brian Watson opened the evening with a 3-2 win over Fresno State's Derek Hayes, but lost in the final to second-ranked Todd Beckerman of Nebraska, 4-2.

Freshman 125-pounder Shaun Williams began the evening in the consolation bracket and posted four straight wins, including two over top-10 ranked opponents, and took third place. Williams defeated North Dakota State's Matt Strawster, 8-6, followed by wins over eighth-ranked Nathan Navarro of Oregon State, 9-3, Dan Bambauer of Boise State, 11-4 and fifth-ranked Chuck Connor of North Carolina, 7-3.

All-America senior Doug Lee lost his first match of the tournament in his Saturday opener, a 8-2 decision to Illinois' Nate Patrick, yet won his final two matches to still take third. He finished the evening with wins over Boise State's Cash Edwards, 4-3, and Lehigh's Rob Rohn, 9-5.

Senior 197-pounder Chael Sonnen started Saturday with a 7-4 loss to Illinois' Pat Quirk, then withdrew from his consolation match due to sickness.

Junior 157-pounder Eugene Harris lost his opener to Arizona State's Rocky Smart, 6-4.

The Ducks' next action is Wed., Dec. 13 against Oregon State in the season's first edition of the Civil War, scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. at McArthur Court.
