Saint Louis-Washington Quotes
Dec. 5, 2000
WASHINGTON HEAD COACH BOB BENDER
On St. Louis:
'What they did was pretty typical of the type of team that they are and how they can hurt you. I give them a lot of credit, they pounded it inside and then they forced us to make a lot of adjustments. They had a good balance, they weren't relying on the three point shot. They executed their offense tremendously.'
'There were some positive things we did, the way that we hung in there and kept battling. But the area that came back to haunt us: ill-timed shots when we got momentum that led to buckets on the other end. In games like this, when you are playing from behind, you've got to get a shot down every time and it's got to be a good shot. We need some time off and get away from the physical part of this. We'll gather ourselves and get ready for the games back east. There are some things that are getting better, there was some contribution from a few guys that haven't had it.'
On going on the road after a loss:
'Winning obviously helps going into exams. When you go 4-2, you feel pretty good about yourself and going on the road you get some confidence. But, we are 3-3 and the (Florida International) game may be a long way from here, but it is going to be a huge game for us because we want to get back above .500 before we go to Puerto Rico.'
On team shooting:
'We had opportunities to score baskets and we were casual, we didn't finish. That hurts. There were big momentum plays and we found ourselves down at halftime. We'd get ourselves stopping the clock because they fouled and we wouldn't reward ourselves at the foul line with two each time. Little things like that continue to haunt us, but we've got to hang in there and maybe things will change for us. We've got to change our luck by being in a position where the game is close.'
SAINT LOUIS HEAD COACH LORENZO ROMAR
On returning to Washington:
'It's a fun victory, no question about it. It was a lot of fun when I was here.'
On the big guys:
'Our big guys do a great job of leading us. They've been on the road, they've been through the wars. They came in here and played solid defense, and made the plays that they had to make.'
On Matt Baniak:
'What a great game he had. He got us going. They adjusted to him in the second half, but again, we had a lot of guys give a great effort.'
On Chris Heinrich:
'He was everywhere. It was great to see Chris play like that. Collectively, our seniors have done a great job behind the scenes, in the locker room, leading when the coaches aren't there. You're only as good as your senior leadership, and I think that we have really good senior leadership.'
On the rebounding:
'I knew the numbers. We gave up far too many offensive rebounds. I've said it before, our defense has got to get better at not giving up offensive rebounds.'
