Ron English Retained As Assistant Football Coach

Dec. 7, 2000

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State head football coach Dirk Koetter announced Thursday that he will retain Ron English from Bruce Snyder's staff as cornerbacks coach.

Koetter has filled eight of the nine coaching positions on his staff and will announce the ninth soon.

English is in his third season as the Sun Devils secondary coach, playing an instrumental role in the development of ASU's safety group, including Willie Daniel and Alfred Williams.

In 1999 the Sun Devils ranked third in the conference in pass defense, surrendering just 226 yards per game.

English, who was a graduate assistant coach for ASU during the 1994-95 seasons, coached the San Diego State secondary from 1996-97.

English also played under Bruce Snyder at the University of California-Berkeley where he was a safety. English played for the Golden Bears from 1987-90, including a visit to the 1990 Copper Bowl versus Wyoming.

Prior to coaching at San Diego State, English coached at Northern Arizona University where he was the outside linebackers coach. He also coached the defensive backs at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif., before becoming a graduate assistant at ASU where he worked with the defensive line.

After playing only one season of football at Ganesha High School, English went on to California where he was a four-year starter on special teams and started at strong safety during his senior year. English collected 134 total tackles and seven sacks during his college career.

English, 31, graduated from California in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in communications. He then earned his master's degree in education administration from ASU in 1995.

He coached All-WAC cornerback Ricky Parker, who played with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1996. In his second year at SDSU, he coached the entire secondary, which included free safety Jason Moore and strong safety Rico Curtis. Moore and Curtis earned all-WAC honors.

English is married the former Sophia Woodard and the couple has one son, Simon Everett (1).
