OSU Wrestles To Split With Nationally-Ranked Teams

Dec. 9, 2000

LINCOLN, Neb. - No. 14 Oregon State split a pair of dual meets with nationally-ranked wrestling teams Saturday, falling 23-10 to seventh-ranked Nebraska then bouncing back to beat 15th-ranked Ohio State 23-13 in the Nebraska Duals at Lincoln Northeast High.

'I think we'd like a couple of the matches against Nebraska back - I think we were closer than what the score showed,' OSU assistant coach Jeff Cardwell said. 'It was a good win to come back and beat Ohio State, a Big Ten team that's always been pretty good. Now we look forward to the Ducks, which should be a good meet.'

The Beavers (2-1 overall, 1-0 Pacific-10) will travel to No. 17 Oregon on Wednesday night for a Pacific-10 dual. OSU returns home next Saturday at noon for the Oregon State Duals, meeting Cal-Davis, Pacific (Ore.) and Central Washington in Gill Coliseum.

Starting the day against a strong Nebraska lineup, the Beavers saw four close matches go the Cornhuskers' way. OSU 165-pounder Jed Pennell lost in overtime and 125-pounder Nathan Navarro, 184-pounder Isaac Weber and 149-pounder Casey Horn lost tough decisions. Oregon State 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen, ranked fifth nationally, fell 9-4 to second-ranked Bryan Snyder.

Oregon State picked up an upset victory at 174 pounds, where 10th-ranked Nathan Coy knocked off ninth-ranked Ati Conner 2-1, OSU also got victories from 18th-ranked 141-pounder Shane Cunanan and fifth-ranked heavyweight Jason Cooley.

'We had a little powwow between meets,' Cardwell said. 'The coaches talked and some of the guys talked about trying to win those close matches ... we said, `Hey, if you go out and fill up the seven minutes and lose, we can look at the film and make adjustments. Just don't go out there and be apprehensive'.'

Cunanan scored an upset for his second win of the day, knocking off 17th-ranked Robert Sessley 2-1. Richards scored a pin of Jeff Ratliff in 2:13. Jorgensen rebounded strongly from his loss, winning a technical fall over Josh Janson, Jorgensen is now 12-2 this season with six technical falls. Oregon State also picked up victories from Navarro, Pennell and Coy.
