Men's And Women's Tennis Teams Are Ranked No. 1

PRINCETON, New Jersey - The Stanford men and women were voted No. 1 in the preseason edition of the WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings for the 2000-01 season, administered and released today by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Stanford men, coming off their fourth NCAA title in five years, return five of six starters from last season's squad. Leading the way for the Cardinal this season will once again be defending NCAA singles champion Alex Kim and All-American K.J. Hippensteel. Stanford garnered 42 of 43 first-place votes for 2,400 points. The Cardinal opens its season on Jan. 26 at Oregon.
Rounding out the Top 10 behind Stanford are (in order): Tennessee, UCLA, Duke, Texas A&M, TCU, Georgia, Illinois, Florida and Virginia Commonwealth. Georgia received the other first-place vote.
The Stanford women are No. 1 in the WingspanBank.com preseason rankings for the second straight year. The Cardinal women return five of six starters from last season's NCAA runner-up squad, including sophomore NCAA champ Laura Granville. The Cardinal received 14 of 30 first-place votes for 1,487 points. Right behind Stanford in a tie for second are defending NCAA champ Georgia and Florida, with 10 and seven first-place votes, respectively. Last May Georgia, which returns four of six starters, edged Stanford 5-4 to claim its second national title.
Rounding out the Top 10 behind Stanford, Florida and Georgia are: Duke, California, Texas, Arizona State, Wake Forest, UCLA and Pepperdine.
