Dec. 13, 2000
PRINCETON, New Jersey - The Stanford men's and women's tennis teams had 10 players ranked in the WingspanBank.com National Collegiate Tennis Singles Rankings, administered and released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Cardinal women had four singles players ranked, all in the Top 25, with junior Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL) coming in at No. 8. Sophomore and defending NCAA singles champion Laura Granville (Chicago, IL) is ranked No. 20 after a No. 1 ranking in the preseason, Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ) is No. 21 and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV) No. 23.
In the doubles rankings, the duo of Kalvaria and Lastra is tabbed as the No. 3 team, while freshman Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) and Kalvaria are No. 13. Granville and Lastra round out the Stanford women in the rankings at No. 30
For the Cardinal men, sophomore David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL) is the top-ranked player at No. 14. Scotty Scott (Belvedere, CA) is No. 43 and Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) is also in the Top 50 at No. 46. Returning All-American K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA) is ranked No. 52. Because he did not compete collegiately in the fall, defending NCAA singles champion Alex Kim (Potomac, MD) is not ranked. Ali Ansari (Houston, TX) and Carter Morris (Washington D.C.) are also ranked in singles play at No. 83 and No. 86, respectively.
The doubles team of Ansari and Scott is the only Stanford team to be ranked, coming in at No. 32.
The ITA uses a point-per-match computer formula to determine the national singles and doubles rankings. The complete Top 100 singles and Top 50 doubles rankings can be found at www.ITAtennis.com, the official website of the ITA.
SMU's Genius Chidzikwe and Wake Forest's Bea Bielik are the top-ranked players in singles play. Virginia's Huntley Montgomery and Brian Vahaly are No. 1 in men's doubles, while Wake Forest's Janet Bergman and Bea Bielik are the top women's doubles team.
