No. 13 Beavers Blank Cal-Davis 43-(-2)

Dec. 16, 2000

CORVALLIS, Ore. - No. 13 Oregon State posted its first wrestling shutout in almost five years Saturday afternoon, beating California-Davis 43-(-2) in a Pacific-10 dual meet at Gill Coliseum. The Beavers swept their three contests at the Oregon State Duals, prior to beating the Aggies, OSU (5-2 overall, 2-1 Pac-10) had beaten Central Washington 35-9 and then Pacific 36-4.

OSU won all 10 matches for the first time since a 44-0 home win over Lehigh early in the 1995-96 season. Cal-Davis (4-2, 0-2) finished the meet with negative points after being penalized two team points for unsportsmanlike conduct, it was the first time in OSU's 1,102-dual history dating back to 1909 that the Beavers ever finished a meet with their opponent in negative points.

The Beavers used the afternoon to test their starting lineup against Cal-Davis and to provide most of their reserves with a varsity match. OSU did not use more than one starter against Central Washington, which is ranked No. 18 in NCAA Division II, or Pacific, which is ranked No. 14 in Division III.

'We had 13 different guys wrestle matches who don't normally get a varsity spot,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'We hope that some varsity experience and meet experience helps them and helps us as a team. It's a lot different atmosphere than wrestling in practice, and now they can bring this experience back to the practice room and give some other guys a tougher go and some tougher matches.'

Wells liked what the varsity newcomers showed in beating a pair of nationally-ranked teams from lower divisions.

'Some of those guys were wrestling (varsity) for the first time, so it was good to see that,' Wells said. 'They competed well. We wrestled aggressively and maintained good control.'

Oregon State's starting lineup was intact for the final meet against Cal-Davis, and Casey Horn's pin at 149 pounds in the opening match started the Beavers on their way. OSU also got pins from 125-pounder Nathan Navarro and 141-pounder Shane Cunanan, major decisions from 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen and 184-pounder Isaac Weber, and a forfeit at heavyweight against the Aggies.

Jorgensen, ranked fifth nationally by Amateur Wrestling News, is now 14-2 this season. Nathan Coy, ranked ninth nationally at 174 pounds, won twice on Saturday to run his winning streak to seven and is now 14-3 this season.

The Beavers also got a big win from 197-pounder Jason Lovell. He took a 7-0 win over Brandon Arsenault, who entered the meet ranked fourth in the Pacific-10 while Lovell was unranked in the conference.

OSU's victory over Cal-Davis was also the Beavers' first shutout of a Pac-10 opponent since a 51-0 home win over Oregon in 1984. It was the most points OSU had scored in a meet since the 44-0 shutout of Lehigh in 1996 and it was the Beavers' widest margin of victory since topping Pacific 46-0 in 1993.
