UCLA Head Coach Steve Lavin
- Entering his fifth season as UCLA's head coach and 10th on the Bruin staff, with a school and career record of 95-42 (69.3, 137 games). On March 30, 1999, he was awarded a new six-year contract, including a rollover clause, through the 2004-2005 season. Lavin is 1-0 vs. Purdue. Lavin is 7-4 (63.6) in NCAA Tournament play. Since the NCAA Tournament was expanded to 64 teams in 1985, he is the first UCLA head coach to lead UCLA to three NCAA 'Sweet 16' appearances in a four-year stretch. In his four+ seasons, the Bruins have averaged almost 23 wins a year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament all four seasons, including the 'Elite Eight' (1997) and 'Sweet 16' twice (1998 and 2000) and also won the 1997 Pacific-10 title.Lavin is one of just four coaches in the nation to lead his school to three Sweet 16's in the last four years. The others are Purdue's Gene Keady, Michigan State's Tom Izzo and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski.

In his 21st season at Purdue, with a school record of 446-193 (69.8) and in 22+ years as a head coach, he's 484-212 (69.5).
The Boilermakers -
Purdue plays at Akron on Wednesday. After losing two of its first three games (but the win was over Arizona, 72-69), Purdue has won six straight. The Boilermakers have scored over 90 points in their last two games, 98-52 over Santa Clara and 93-48 over Florida International.

Gene Keady gave Steve Lavin his first college coaching job. Lavin was a member of the Purdue coaching staff from 1988-91.
Former Bruin head coach John Wooden was a Purdue three-time All-American from 1930-32.

UCLA leads it 9-3. Last season, UCLA beat Purdue in Pauley Pavilion, 55-53. Jason Kapono won the game for UCLA, driving the length of the court and scoring on a layup with just one second left to play.

Dec. 23 -- No. 15 North Carolina 80, UCLA 70Before 10,593 in Pauley Pavilion, North Carolina beat UCLA 80-70. It was only the Bruins' seventh nonconference loss in Pauley since the 1989-90 season (77 games).
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 19-point lead (34-15) with 6:06 left in the first half and led 46-30 at halftime. The Bruins stormed back in the second half and took their first lead at 58-56, with 7:25 left to play ( UCLA outscored NC 28'10 in the first 12:35 of the second half) on two free throws by Earl Watson. The Bruins' last lead was at 62-60 with 5:54 left to play, on a layin by Watson. In the final 5:10 of the game, UCLA was outscored by NC 20-8.
UCLA was led by Watson's career and game-high 30 points, season-high seven rebounds, three assists and season-high tying four steals in 40 minutes. He did not have a turnover. It was the most points scored by a Bruin since March 1998, when Kris Johnson had 33 points in UCLA's 102-94 win over Arizona State in Pauley. Matt Barnes recorded his second consecutive double-double and third of the season, getting a career-high 18 points and a career-high tying and team-high 10 rebounds.The Bruins shot 33.8 (23-68) from the field, 25.0 (6-24) from three-point range and 62.1 (18-29) from the foul line, with 36 rebounds and 14 turnovers.
North Carolina shot 50.0 (27-54) from the field, 30.8 (4-13) from three-point range and 66.7 (22-33) from the line, with a game-high 47 rebounds and 22 turnovers. NC was led by Joseph Forte's 29 points.
