Borges to Leave UCLA

Jan. 4, 2001

Al Borges, who has spent the last five years as UCLA's offensive coordinator, has been named offensive coordinator at California, it was announced today.

'Al is a great friend,' said UCLA head coach Bob Toledo 'This is a good opportunity for him to build something from the ground up. I know he's excited about the challenge and I'm very happy for him.

'Al and I think a lot alike when it comes to offense.'

Toledo said there is no timetable for hiring a new offensive coordinator because whomever is hired will be running the same system UCLA has utilized during Toledo's tenure as head coach.

'We have run a wide open offense, featuring a balance between the run and the pass, during my career as offensive coordinator and head coach, and that will not change.'
