Devils Unable To Topple No. 21 Cardinal

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Sarah Dimson scored 17 of her 21 points in the firsthalf to lead No. 21 Stanford over Arizona State 92-64 on Thursday night in thePac-10 opener for both teams.

Nicole Powell scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and Lindsey Yamasakiadded 21 points as the Cardinal (7-4) improved to 7-0 at home and won their12th conference opener in 15 years.

Melody Johnson scored 19 points to lead Arizona State (8-5), which fell to0-3 against ranked opponents this season. Natalie Tucker added 12 points.

The Sun Devils have not won at Stanford since March 3, 1984, a span of 17games.

Stanford's Lauren St. Clair broke her nose during practice Monday, but wasable to play with a nose mask.

The Cardinal maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half andcontinued to build on it until the final margin. The Cardinal have beaten theSun Devils by at least 15 points the last eight times the teams have met atStanford.

Arizona State, coached by Stanford grad Charli Turner Thorne, shot 47percent in the first half, but the Cardinal were even better, hitting on 69percent of their shots in the first 20 minutes.

Dimson, who made her first seven shots, connected on her first career3-pointer as time was running out in the first half to give Stanford a 49-34halftime lead.
