No. 10 Oregon Wrestling Can't Corral No. 2 Cowboys

Jan. 4, 2001

Oklahoma City - The University of Oregon wrestling team couldn't find an answer for No. 2 Oklahoma State Thursday, falling 33-3 at the Community Center in Oklahoma City. The Ducks are 3-2 overall, 3-0 Pac-10 and the Cowboys improve to 6-0.

'We knew coming in we'd have to bring our `A' game and not make little mistakes,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'This is why we scheduled these tough teams - to expose our weaknesses. That's what the national tournament does and now we've got it on film and have 10 weeks to work on those areas.'

Junior transfer Shaun Williams (125) scored Oregon's only points of the dual with a 9-7 overtime decision over No. 17 Matt Brown. The Ducks came close at 157, with Eugene Harris losing a close 2-0 decision to No. 15 Shane Roller. Senior All-American and sixth-ranked Doug Lee (184) nearly upset No. 4 Daniel Cromier, but fell 6-5. Two other matches (133, 165) were decided by three points.

'We lost a couple of really close matches,' Kearney said. 'But hopefully the guys can learn that you have to wrestle for seven minutes. You can't ease up and let people dominate you. You've got to wrestle fast and set the tempo. That's something we'll work on.'

Oregon sophomore Eric Webb, who is ranked No. 7 at heavyweight this week, was forced to default after being poked in the eye. Webb was 4-0 in dual competition heading into the match, winning all four contests by fall. Kearney said doctors examined Webb twice following the meet and determined he suffered a severe cornea scratch.

The Ducks travel back to Eugene tomorrow and will prepare to take on No. 3 Iowa at McArthur Court Saturday. The match begins a 1:30 p.m. Fox Northwest will rebroadcast parts of the dual Jan. 10 at 8 p.m.
