Bruin Gymnasts Score 196.2 To Win Season Opener

Maui, HI - The top-ranked UCLA gymnastics team opened the 2001 season with a bang,winning the Maui Invitational with a team total of 196.2. The score was the highest everfor a Bruin team in the season opener. Nebraska placed second, followed by Arizona Stateand the UCLA 'B' team.

Freshman Jamie Dantzscher made a stunning debut, recording two perfect 10s - on floorand on bars - to become the first gymnast in UCLA history to record two 10s in one meet.

Senior Mohini Bhardwaj also received a perfect 10 on the floor exercise, the first ofher career. Bhardwaj placed second in the all-around with a mark of 39.4. Sophomore MaliaJones placed third with a 39.225. Nebraska's Alecia Ingram took top honors with a 39.425.

Kristen Maloney was UCLA's other event winner, placing first on the balance beam with a 9.95in her UCLA debut.

UCLA led Nebraska by less than two-tenths of a point going into its last rotation but pulledaway with a school-record 49.75 on the uneven bars.
