No. 5 Auburn, No. 10 Flordia Top ASU Women's Swimming & Diving

Jan. 6, 2001

AUBURN, Ala. -- Ranked 19th and coming off a convincing win at Tennessee, the women of Arizona State swimming and diving did not have enough to upset No. 5 Auburn or No. 10 Florida at the James E. Martin center in Auburn, Ala., Saturday.

Auburn defended its home waters with a team total of 151.5, with Florida's 127 taking second before ASU's third-place 73.5.

Junior Riley Mants took first-place in the 100 yard breaststroke and second in the 200y breast, while senior Lauren Morelli took first in the 200y backstroke and second in the 100y back.

In the 100y breast, Mants out-dueled Auburn's Cortnee Adams. Adams looked to defend her pool with a 1:04.84, but Mants was stronger with a 1:04.53. But Laura Swander exacted some revenge on Mants in the 200y breast when she touched the wall in 2:18.03, forcing Mants to settle for a runner-up finish in 2:18.57.

Also in the 200y breast, sophomore Josie Jedick made her first appearance in that event this season and swam 2:23.09 to finish fourth. Jennifer Lowe earned sixth-place in 2:24.66.

Morelli, who is ASU's record holder in the 100y back with a time of 55.59, would have almost had to match that to defeat Auburn's Taylor Spivey. While Morelli swam 58.44 for second-place, Spivey finished well ahead in 55.73. However, the 200y back allowed for ASU redemption as Morelli defeated Florida's Mary Beth Mounce 2:03.82 to 2:04.74. Sun Devil junior Alicia Wheelock placed third in 2:08.64.

With school record holder Sarah Baham not in the event, freshman Florence Mauro looked to lead the way for ASU in the 100y butterfly. Racing to a 57.16 finish, Mauro was defeated only by Auburn's Demerae Christianson in 56.98. Fellow freshman Miranda Shald finished sixth in 57.87.

Janelle Atkinson of Florida earned two first-place finishes. Atkinson first won the 200y freestyle 1:48.94, before adding the 100y free title in 51.76. ASU's Claire Hedenskog finished eighth in the 200y free in 1:53.53, with Mauro right behind her in 1:53.64.

With a tough road trip complete, the Sun Devil women will welcome to Tempe the likes of Stanford, California and Northern Arizona with San Diego over three days of home aquatic action from Jan. 19-21.
