NO. 15 Oregon State Opens Oregon Wrestling Classic Duals With A Win

PORTLAND, Ore. - Oregon State opened the Oregon Wrestling Classic Dualson Friday afternoon with a 43-3 win over Southern Oregon, the nation'sfifth-ranked NAIA team. OSU (6-3 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10) was to wrap upFriday's action at Memorial Coliseum with a Pacific-10 meet against PortlandState at 8 p.m.

OSU returns home Jan. 20 against a pair of Pacific-10 foes in the OregonState Duals, meeting Cal Poly at 11:30 a.m. and 11th-ranked Boise State at 1:30p.m. in Gill Coliseum.

Against Southern Oregon, the Beavers recorded team bonus points in seven oftheir nine wins, picking up four pins, a technical fall and a pair of majordecisions. OSU's margin of victory was its largest over Southern Oregon since a43-0 win in 1973, a year ago, the Beavers had edged the Raiders just 20-18 inAshland.

Oregon State picked up falls by 141-pounder Shane Cunanan, 149-pounderCasey Horn, 165-pounder Jed Pennell and 174-pounder Nathan Coy, plus a technicalfall from 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen. From 133 through 174 pounds, OSU earnedbonus points in six straight matches.

Four OSU victories were over Southern Oregon wrestlers ranked nationally in theNAIA. Pennell's pin came over seventh-ranked John Sills in 5:39, Coy, rankedsixth nationally in Division I, flattened sixth-ranked Zach Mock in 4:46.OSU freshman Clint Sieminski, getting a rare varsity match, started the meetwith a 5-2 win over SOU's sixth-ranked Nolan Harris at 125 pounds. To wrapthings up, sixth-ranked heavyweight Jason Cooley of OSU beat second-ranked DevinCole 6-1.

The Beavers' only loss came at 184 pounds, where freshman Ryan Jorgensen wasbeaten 13-6 by Southern Oregon's Dan Sturgell. Sturgell, the NAIA nationalrunner-up in 2000, went into the match unranked but returned to action just aweek ago after recovering from an injury.

OSU 133-pounder Ben Richards was unavailable for Friday's meets, openingthe door for Sieminski. That bumped Nathan Navarro - ranked 10th nationally at125 pounds - up to 133 against SOU, and he responded with a 15-4 win over LeeOttow.
