ASU Women's Tennis Battles Against Some Of Nation's Best in Pac-10 Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Three players from the seventh-ranked Arizona State women's tennis squad started off the 2001 season after traveling to Seattle for this weekend's three-day Pac-10 Indoor Tennis Tournament, hosted by the University of Washington at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center. Freshman Jennifer Baker, sophomore Adria Engel, and senior Celena McCoury began competition Friday in singles action.
Competing for ASU in the singles No. 1 flight of the first round, Engel defeated Michelle Gough of the University of Arizona, 6-2, 6-1. She then knocked off No. 21-ranked Keiko Tokuda from Stanford in quarterfinal action, 6-3, 6-4. McCoury, battling in the No. 2 flight, was handed an unfortunate 6-1, 6-1 loss by UCLA's Catherine Hawley. In the No. 3 flight, Baker defeated Nicole Havlicek of California, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, but fell in the quarterfinals to Stanford's Amelia Anderson, 6-1, 6-4.
Doubles action, along with the fourth flight and singles consolation, will begin this morning as the tournament resumes action at 9 a.m. (PST).
