Kapono Garners His First Player Of The Week Honor

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA sophomore forward Jason Kapono has been named the Pacific-10Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 8-15, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Kapono, from Lakewood, Calif., averaged 24.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in victories over USC and Villanova, extending the Bruins' winning streak to five games.

He tallied 20 points (5-13 FG, 8-8 FT) and nine rebounds against No. 19 USC, then added a career-high 28 points (9-14 FG, 8-9 FT) and eight rebounds vs. Villanova. For the week, he shot 14-of-27 (.519) from the field and 16-of-17 (.941) from the free throw line. Kapono has scored 20 or more points seven times this season.

It is the first weekly award for Kapono, the 36th all-time honor for the Bruins.
